Sakten Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 2003, is Bhutan’s easternmost protected area, covering 650 sq. km in Trashigang and Samdrup Jongkhar. It conserves diverse ecosystems—from alpine meadows to subtropical forests—and shelters rare species like the Red Panda, Himalayan Black Bear, and Blyth’s Tragopan. The sanctuary is also culturally significant as home to the Brokpa, a semi-nomadic community with unique traditions, making it a vital hub for both biodiversity and cultural preservation.
